Individual Tutoring Sessions

Literacy or math support tailored to individual needs

Reading Support: We offer one-on-one explicit instruction in the science of reading, building the foundational skills necessary to become a successful reader. For emerging readers, sessions focus on building phonemic awareness, phonics, and the ability to decode and encode words. As students advance, we add fluency and comprehension strategies, using short selections from a wide variety of texts matched to students’ reading levels and interests. Our goal is to foster a love of reading while simultaneously building reading and critical thinking skills.

Math Support: We design engaging problems that develop understanding around the big mathematical ideas at each grade level. With first and second-grade students, we focus on counting, number patterns, and building number sense in our tens-based number system. With third and fourth-grade students, we focus on grouping problems, multiplication, division, and fractions. As students move into 5th and 6th grades, we work on problem-solving with fractions, decimals, and multi-digit numbers. Across the ages, we help students learn to “unpack” problems for themselves, use what they know to solve what they don’t know, develop number relations, and trust themselves as mathematicians. And, we find a lot of joy doing math together!
