The Math Room

Weekly small-group math support for 2nd/3rd and 4th/5th grade groups

With the gift of time outside of school, we can extend and deepen students’ understanding of the “big mathematical ideas” that are important as students advance through the elementary grades. The series runs for 12 Sundays this fall— sign up with a friend and drop in whenever you can! Group size never exceeds 5 students. $250 for 12 classes.

What we do: We use a variety of Number Sense and Reasoning Routines, equations, and word problems based on students’ interests. We talk, play, make sense of problems, solve and write math stories, use a variety of materials to model problems, and share strategies. Students are also welcome to bring problems from school or from their homework to work on together. Families can listen in and learn alongside their students.

In our 2nd/3rd grade group, the focus is on counting to big numbers, decomposing numbers into tens and hundreds, grouping problems that set us up for success with multiplication and division, and solving “Equal Share” problems that build conceptual understanding of fractions. The group meets on Sundays from 4-4:45. Please “Get in Touch” for registration details and dates.

In our 4th/5th grade group, we work on writing and interpreting algebraic expressions, using the power of our tens-based number system to build and decompose larger numbers, calculating with multi-digit numbers, continuing to build number sense around fractions, and calculating with fractions. The group meets Sundays from 5-5:45. Please “Get in Touch” for registration details and dates.
